Aside from its significant physical and psychological benefits, yoga is a popular physical activity because it doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment and it can be done solo with the help of a yoga DVD or constant practice. It’s important, when practicing yoga, to have the right yoga clothes and a satisfactory yoga mat. Your yoga mat is the only real tool you’ll need in practicing this ancient meditative art, so make sure you pick a good one.

Yoga clothes vary based on a person’s physical fitness and interest. In general, your yoga clothes should allow you to have very flexible movement throughout your body. Most people prefer legging-style yoga pants and a form-fitting, flexible shirt. Shoes are optional. Some people prefer to perform their yoga barefooted and some prefer to use sneakers or slipper-like shoes. This really is dependent on your physical space and the type of yoga you’re doing. If you are in a public space, you may want your yoga clothes to include shoes because other people will be sweating in the same performance space as you. If you’re exercising power yoga, you’ll want to wear sneakers because there are active calisthenics involved and you’ll be moving at a fairly rapid speed. For most people, however, performing yoga barefoot is a preferred method because it ensures you the flexibility to move your body into any position.

In addition to your clothes, your yoga mat is surprisingly important for maximizing your range of flexibility. Most people prefer a yoga mat that is relatively sticky in nature because this keeps the mat from sliding and prevents you from sliding around on it. These types of yoga mats, however, are usually difficult to clean and tend to allow germs to stick. Machine-washable mats are usually a bit more expensive but are cleaner and generally more lightweight to carry. When choosing a yoga mat, remember that it needs to be soft enough to counteract the hardness of the floor below it. It should also have good sweat absorbency because pooled sweat will create a slippery and potentially dangerous mat.

Sometimes your yoga DVD will suggest a particular type of yoga mat for the exercises carried out. If this is the case, it’s to choose the mat the yoga DVD suggests. Sometimes yoga mats even come with the DVDs, or vice versa. The price of DVD sets varies based on the type of yoga and the number of exercises presented. Yoga clothes can usually be thrown together out of your closet, but a good pair of yoga pants with maximum flexibility and sweat-wicking material will cost between forty and sixty dollars. Mats vary enormously, but a standard “sticky” style mat will cost around thirty dollars. There are always options to tailor your materials to your personal needs, allowing the prices to vary tremendously.

Yoga meditation is an important part of the yoga process, regardless of which style of yoga you prefer. Yoga benefits your body in a variety of physical ways, meditation benefits your body in a number of psychological ways, and the combined benefits of yoga meditation create one of the strongest health practices you can do for your body.

Yoga benefits are most related to flexibility, as yoga involves a physical discipline that is unparalleled by other physical activities in its scope and includes the widest range of physical benefits of any recreational activity. Increased flexibility and toning of the muscles leads to natural lubrication of the joints and ligaments. Because yoga benefits the entire body, it is unique in that it massages every organ of the body on some level, even organs deep within our internal frames that rarely get exercised, lubricated or massaged. This leads to a complete detoxification, a process that is especially true in Bikram (hot) yoga.

Meditation benefits are so impressive that yoga meditation is the number one natural cure suggested for all psychological conditions and disorders. Meditation involves a strict discipline of the mind that varies in process depending on which style of yoga and meditation you prefer. All meditation benefits the mind in the sense that it involves “turning off” or extreme focusing of thoughts, essentially providing a relaxation of the mind. Clinical studies show that yoga meditation increases willpower, energy and overall satisfaction with life. It is also a powerful de-stressing mechanism and meditation decreases aggression, increases productivity, and encourages the neural synapses to connect at a faster rate. Other meditation benefits include greater emotional stability, improved memory and brain function, lower risk of Alzheimer’s, greater development of intuition, slower aging process within the mind, less restlessness, improved ability to make judgements, and a stronger sense of self.

The combined power of yoga meditation benefits the mind and body in a way that no other physical activity can. Benefits of yoga meditation include lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety, reduced oxygen consumption, greater physical relaxation, decreased respiratory and heart rate, lower cholesterol, relief from asthma and pulmonary conditions, and overall lower use of energy in day-to-day processes. When used on a regular basis, yoga meditation has the long-term benefits of reducing free radicals (toxins within the body), raising levels of DHEAs, speeding the body’s ability to heal, improving air flow into the lungs, lowering risk of depression, anxiety, migraines, headaches, upset stomach and cancer, lowering risk of infertility, normalizing weight, and improving skin’s resistance to stretch. Yoga is rarely considered to be a “hard” physical or mental discipline and it is ideal for people who want to improve their health but are wary of their athletic abilities. It’s also ideal for people who are physically unfit for most sports because it has been clinically proven to reduce chronic pain, improving healing and improve your body’s ability to lose weight.

Yoga is the name for a type of physical and mental practice that was originated in India and is a central practice for Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The Sanskrit translation for “yoga” and thus its derivation probably comes from the word meaning “to unite.” Because yoga and its related practices have been central to many eastern religions for thousands of years, its difficult to pin down specific yoga facts and yoga history.

Yoga is tied very closely to meditation, a practice of mental discipline first believed to have originated with the ascetics responding to the Vedas of Hinduism. Yoga encompasses one of the six orthodox Hindu schools of philosophy, where it refers to a sort of cessation of thought, a mental muscle exercise that practices discipline of thought and relaxation of the mind. The Bhagavad Gita (“Song of the Lord”), a sacred Hindu text that is often followed devoutly, describes three types of yoga: action, devotion and knowledge.

Yoga history ties it most closely with Hinduism, but meditation and mental discipline has been an instrumental belief in Buddhism and Jainism as well, bringing popularity to meditation and yoga-related practices. Most Buddhists believe that yoga, for the Buddha, acts as a sort of metaphor for the freedom that comes with a peaceful death. In a way, yoga is a type of mental death that you can turn on and off. Through mental discipline, you can free your mind from the mental slavery that is believed to so thoroughly plague human beings. By experiencing mental liberation, you prepare yourself for enlightenment.

Throughout yoga history, six main types of yoga have been developed. They all roughly share the same virtues and goals, but all attain them in slightly different manners. The types of yoga, still practiced today, are Inyengar, Bikram (hot), Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Kundalini and, more recently, Power Yoga, which combines the values of aerobics and calisthenics with the relaxation properties of meditation and mental discipline. The differences between the types of yoga are mostly centered around a balance between being self-taught and being formally taught, adherence to strict positions and styles, and the importance of physical discipline versus mental discipline.

Most basic yoga facts and stylistic changes can be found online or through DVD teachings, although yoga purists swear by the power of a formal class teaching. Throughout yoga history, the importance of solo teaching versus formal teachings has flip-flopped tremendously. There are groups within Hinduism that believe yoga facts and practices are best learned by oneself and some who believe that a careful yoga history must be taught and practiced by the scriptures in order to achieve the highest possible enlightenment. Regardless, there is sure to be a type of yoga out there that is right for you and it’s simply a matter of doing a little research to find out which style suits your needs.

Many practitioners of yoga choose to become vegetarian for the health benefits that complement the normal stretching and exercise of the practice. However, this can present some difficulties as being vegetarian requires that a great deal of attention be placed on the foods that are eaten. Many packaged products have animal products in the ingredients, even if they are primarily composed of vegetables. To achieve the level of health that most practitioners desire, it is a good idea to look for vegetarian yoga food from reputable sources or to find a healthy recipe source that provides true vegetarian options.

Yoga food is essentially eating vegetarian meals that are light. While many meat and dairy dishes can make a person feel heavy, vegetarian foods are often light and the yoga food is meant to give the consumer a feeling of energy rather than sedation. One particular aspect that provides a problem to many people who choose a vegetarian lifestyle is making sure that the right amount of protein is ingested. Proteins are generally found in meat, thus alternatives must be used. A healthy recipe should include adequate levels of protein from non-meat sources. Traditional vegetarian sources of protein can come from grains, beans, other legumes, and tofu.

Another reason that some people avoid becoming vegetarian is because the food does not taste as good. However, this is simply not the case. It does take some time to become accustomed to the taste of vegetables without meat, but most people that have made the switch report that they are actually able to taste the foods better after the initial adjustment period has been completed. Meat often is such a strong taste that it covers the taste of vegetables that are served at the same time. Without the meat, a person can start to really taste the vegetarian dishes as they were meant to be eaten. A good way to start with yoga food is to first stop eating red meat, such as beef. After that, the person can gradually cut out other meats from the diet until they are comfortable with a total vegetarian diet.

For a person that has made the switch to a vegetarian lifestyle with yoga food, there are many resources of healthy recipe options to be found online and in book form. Many cookbooks are devoted to vegetarian foods and there are countless websites that offer recipes to choose from. Many of these vegetarian websites also allow users to post their own recipes for other users to try. Becoming a vegetarian is not as difficult as most people think, and combined the decision to eat healthy foods with regular practice of yoga will make a dramatic increase for the person’s overall health.

While some people dismiss Doga as a new fad, the truth is that the mixing dogs and yoga helps to establish a stronger bond between the dog and its owner. Doga is generally based on the traditions and movements of yoga style, but has been customized to meet the different needs of dogs and humans at the same time. Meditation, massage, and stretching all play a part in the exercise routine and owners that practice Doga state that there is a better harmony with the pet after the sessions have been completed.

Contrary to popular belief, Doga is not such a new activity. It was actually created over 8 years ago in Florida by a certified yoga style instructor, Suzi Teitleman. However, the craze is only now attracting national attention. Several well known newspapers and television channels have chronicled the practice and many dog owners have become interested in using Doga to strengthen the bond with their pet. In fact, several Doga centers have been opened across the country as the movement has picked up steam. A dog owner will find a place that caters to dogs and yoga in almost every major city of the country. Of course, the main question that is often asked is if Doga actually provides any true benefits to the pet.

In truth, there is much to be gained by mixing dogs and yoga. Doga establishes a dominant and submissive role for the dog and its owner. In these roles, the participants work together as a team to achieve the correct poses and release tension. Although each dog responds differently to Doga, most will be receptive to the positive energy that is displayed in the practice. Although some yoga style experts deny the movement as being derogatory to the ancient practice of yoga, there are definitely owners that stand behind the movement and defend the beneficial aspects of the movements. Their argument is that by acting together, the dog and owner are able to assume a pack mentality and grow closer together. Some owners state that many of the problems they had with their dogs simply disappeared after they made the activity a part of their regular exercise routine. Dogs and yoga also have a direct benefit for the owners. The weight of a dog will provide more resistance, thus creating better results from the stretches and movements.

Whether or not the activity will last has yet to be seen. Although opposition from yoga traditionalists has belittled the activity, many dog owners believe that the practice provides real and tangible positive results. For now, dogs and yoga do have a place together and Doga is rapidly becoming one of the best ways for owners and dogs to exercise and achieve a better harmony together.

The practice of yoga has been around for centuries, but still many people do not realize all of the Yoga Benefits that are involved with the exercises. Found as part of several major religions, Yoga Health Benefits focus on both the mind and body of a person. The exercises have been designed in a way that gives a person better control over all functions and helps provide more focus to the mind’s thoughts.

Most people only know of the Physical Benefits that yoga can provide. The positions help to stretch all muscles and ligaments of the body, leading to much greater flexibility and placing less strain on the joints of the body. This reduction in strain makes it easier to perform nearly all physical activities. The physical side of Yoga Benefits begins with the idea that all of the movements involved in the practice are related to each other. Even when a person is in a position that involves straining, there are still positive Yoga Health Benefits that occur. Most people think of stretching and exercising as only involving the muscles and improving movement and flexibility, but Yoga Benefits also include the bodily organs as well. The positions and stretches help to massage all of the organs. The direct Yoga Health Benefits of this massaging action is that the organs are kept in a healthier state, meaning that diseases and sickness are less likely among people that engage in regular practice. Detoxification is yet another of the Physical Benefits that can be found from using yoga. The movements increase and promote better circulation of blood to all areas of the body. These Yoga Benefits aid the body’s natural process of removing toxins from various places.

On the other hand, Yoga Benefits are not only physical. The Mental Benefits of practicing yoga are quite numerous. In fact, the true goal of yoga is related to the mind. A person who uses yoga in the correct way is actually trying to find freedom from all of the mental anguish and suffering found in the process of living. In working towards this goal, there are many important Mental Benefits. The obvious yoga benefit is relaxation. The sequence of the movements and positions are meant to slow the mind’s pace and focus more easily on letting go of everyday stress. The breathing cycles that are central to Yoga Benefits allow a person to become more calm and in this manner can move with more fluidity and less rigidness. The Yoga Benefits of calmness and relaxation also help in lowering the amount of anxiety felt by the practitioner. When a person is using yoga, the end result should be more energy for both the body and mind. People who practice the exercises on a regular basis commonly state that the Yoga Benefits are physical, mental, and even spiritual.

For those people who want the best and most spiritually intense yoga practice, Kundalini Yoga is the way to go. The Kundalini Yoga practice combines all other types of yoga to make for an experience that is extremely life changing. Practitioners of Kundalini focus on changing their consciouness, intuition, self knowledge, and creativity for the better. They feel that the practice helps them to reach these goals and to be better, more well rounded people. The practice will lead to many Kundalini benefits. However, some of these benefits of Kundalini, such as enlightenment, can be difficult to understand all alone or with solo practice. For that reason, it is best to only take Kundalini Classes with certified, knowledgeable teachers who can guide the practitioners through every step of the process.

The most important belief to understand about Kundalini Yoga is that the soul, also termed the “spiritual energy” is located in the body and can be tapped into. Most Kundalini practitioners believe this spiritual area to be at the base of the spine. One of the Kundalini benefits then is becoming aware of this energy and seeing the beauty and light that all people possess. With constant practice and after years of Kundalini Classes, most Kundalini practitioners believe it is possible to reach a perfect, happy state. Once this state is achieved, however, the practice of Kundalini should continue to be followed.

There are many basic Kundalini poses that interested people can try at home, on their own. These individuals are also encouraged to read up on Kundalini Yoga and to spend some time deciding if Kundalini is right for them and their needs and goals in life. If an interest develops and the person wises to experience all the many benefits and joys of Kundalini practice, it is advisable to look for a reputable studio or a private instructor in the local area. As mentioned above, Kundalini can be done at home, using DVDs or even internet guides, but it really is in the person’s best interest to work with a professional. These people can explain the deeper meanings of the Kundalini practice and walk the new practitioner through the various stages of enlightenment and growth. Just bear in mind at all times that it’s best to treat Kundalini as a spiritual quest and not just as an exercise.

Certain benefits of Kundalini Yoga will only develop over time, which encourages using Kundalini devotedly. Some benefits of Kundalini that have been observed in the past include a lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, the treatment of asthma, lessening of diabetes symptoms, full treatment of issues related to stress, helping people to overcome addiction, and the treatment of depression. While these claims cannot be proven, many long time Kundalini practitioners will swear by them. In the end, Kundalini practice, however, will definitely give every person a sense of peace and well being.

His theory was that as the Hatha Yoga Postures were completed and eventually mastered, the body would become more pure and healthy and that the mind and spirit would then be able to meditate on a different and much higher level. Today, Hatha is accessible to all people. People of any age, skill or experience level, and weight can modify Hatha to achieve mental and physical health.

One of the most common Hatha Yoga Postures is Mountain Pose or Tadasana, which is considered a standing pose. Most people will learn this Hatha Yoga position during their very first Hatha session. To do it, the practitioner simply stands erect, being sure to be strong in the legs. Then, the hands are placed at chest level, the palms facing and touching each other. This Hatha position is meant to be one of strength.

More experienced practitioners of Hatha Yoga will be able to do backbends, twist, and other movements that can appear complicated at first glance. If they’re really broken down though, these Hatha moves are easy to master. Take the Camel Pose or Ustrasana, for example. What looks beautiful and exotic in this pose is actually quite simple. The practitioner sits upward on the knees and then leans backward to grasp and hold the outstretched ankles. The important thing here and the thing that gives the Hatha posture its sense of beauty and grace is to bend slowly and gracefully, at the waist, arching out the stomach and chest but not the back. This pose allows for easily flowing breath and a sense of unity or wholeness in the body.

Inversions are another important part of Hatha Yoga. These poses can look difficult to the beginning Hatha practitioner, but all they take is practice to master. When most people look at the plow pose, they find it intimidating, but it’s a fairly simple part of Hatha. The practitioner begins by lying flat on the back and then slowly raises the back and buttocks off of the floor and above the head. Simultaneously or after the legs are lifted, depending on the instructions of the Hatha instructor, the hands are joined together and stretched away from the body. Then the uplifted legs go behind or over the head, reaching as far backward as possible. The ideal Hatha pose of the inversion would be with the legs straight back and the toes touching the ground.

The important thing to remember about Hatha Yoga, however, is that the spirit of Hatha is what really counts. The spirit of Hatha isn’t concerned with how well a pose is executed or with how long the person has been practicing Hatha or for how many hours a day. Instead, the spirit of Hatha is about approaching yoga with an open heart and a willingness to learn.

Bikram Yoga, also called Yoga Bikram or “hot” or “heat” Yoga, is a much loved form of Yoga practice, which has recently become extremely popular in the United States. The Bikram form of Yoga practice combines practices from all different forms of yoga, resulting in 26 standard postures and 2 breathing exercises. This routine is followed each time a person goes to a Bikram sesson, which usually lasts an hour or longer and takes place in a heated and humid room. The heat and humidity utilized in the Bikram practice allows for a more intense workout, the ability to stretch further and deeper, better relaxed muscles and bodies, and for the relief of stress. The heat serves to detoxify the body as well, and most Bikram practitioners leave the session feeling better, healthier, and happier.

Many people worry that they will not be able to perform Yoga Birkam due to the heat. However, most people find that they quickly get used to the humidity and the warmth involved in Bikram Yoga and that they come to enjoy it. It is not uncommon for those who are new to Bikram to not be able to complete an entire session on their first try. If this is the case, they are encouraged to gradually increase how long they can perform Bikram until they are able to complete an entire session. It’s really about working with one’s body to reach its full potential. Beginners may experience dizzy spells, nausea, or extreme thirst. However, these go away with dedicated Bikram practice and do not cause any more serious effects.

Many people try to practice Bikram Yoga in their own homes or without an instructor. However, this is not advisable. Yoga Bikram is supposed to be performed in a room at exactly one hundred and five degrees and forty percent humidity. These ideal Bikram conditions are nearly impossible to reach in one’s own home or other area. Therefore, it is best to find a local studio in the area. Without the proper Bikram conditions, the practice may not be safe or may simply not offer all of the possible benefits. If money is an issue, be aware that many Bikram studios in the United States offer a “donation” based program, meaning Bikram practitioners simply give what they can for each class that they attend. Finding one of these studios is a great way to fit a Bikram program into one’s life without causing financial worry.

Not much is needed to begin practicing Bikram Yoga. Most people simply wear very light workout gear, usually just enough to keep covered in the hot conditions. Some people, especially those who are new to Bikram Yoga, may also require “props” to help until they can master the Bikram poses on their own. All Bikram practitioners will need a sticky yoga mat. However, before making an investment in Bikram materials, it is advisable to check with the yoga studio and see if they provide these objects for use during classes.

Ashtanga Yoga, also known as Power Yoga or Vinyasa Yoga is a Yoga Style designed by K. Pattabhi Jois. The name Ashtanga Yoga actually means eight limbed yoga. This name is apt since there are eight different “points” or goals of this practice. This form of Yoga concentrates on combining movement and careful breathing, much like most of the other forms. The difference here, however, is the spiritual emphasis and also the fact that the moves flow smoothly one into another. The poses are also held for increasing amounts of time as more skill and stamina is earned through devoted practice. This Ashtanga Yoga Style isn’t all about doing the moves perfectly, however. It’s more about reaching spiritual peace and enlightenment and also learning to appreciate the beauty of the poses and even the beauty of the mistakes made along the way. It is about connecting the body and the spirit together in a deep and meaningful way.

While practicing Ashtanga Yoga, certain movements are repeated in between each different pose or movement. Those practicing the exercise are encouraged to breathe deeply and fully on each inhale and exhale. The breaths are carefully aligned with the movements in this Yoga Style, allowing practitioners to reach a state of peace and concentration. The eight points of Power Yoga, as mentioned above include following certain moral rules or codes, being dedicated to the practice of yoga and to purifying the body, practicing good posture, taking control of one’s breathing, taking control of one’s senses, doing every movement and every action with intention and purpose, meditating, and taking the time to contemplate one’s actions throughout the day in order to make self assessments.

In Ashtanga Yoga, it is considered very important to practice regularly. That is because Ashtanga Yoga is considered a lifestyle and not just a form of exercise. However, people who practice Power Yoga will be happy to know that the practice allows for people to learn at their own pace, moving and growing as they see comfortable. There are no strict rules about how long an Ashtanga Yoga session must last and no emphasis on reaching set physical goals within a pre determined amount of time. Thus, Power Yoga is great for those who want a lot of freedom and personal space.

To begin practicing Ashtanga Yoga, it is highly advisable to go to a professional yoga study that specializes in different forms of Power Yoga. If a person doesn’t feel comfortable with this, however, there are lots of DVDs and other instructional products that can teach a person how to do yoga from the comfort of their own home. All it really takes to become skilled at Power Yoga is personal devotion, a willingness to learn, and an open mind and heart.

Believe it or not I practice yoga and meditation to fight the psychological causes of erectile dysfunction. I have suffered from this condition for seven months, which is exactly the amount of time which I have been jobless. I still do not understand why my boss fired me when I was the most dedicated sales man in the entire furniture store. I guess that it’s because I do not approve of my boss’s decision and because I am very frustrated about loosing my job that I have been suffering from so much stress for the past seven months. My life has become so stressful it feels as if it has gotten out of control and now that I suffer from impotence my stress condition has gotten even worst.

The best way for you to understand just how desperate I am to reduce my stress levels is for me to tell you that I have joined yoga and meditation classes to reduce the psychological causes of erectile dysfunction.

I honestly do not like to do yoga very much but supposedly this discipline helps to release stress and to reduce anxiety so I will continue to practice it for as long as I have to. If impotence is linked to stress and yoga and meditation are supposed to reduce the psychological causes of erectile dysfunction, meaning stress, then no matter how much I hate to do such exercises I will force myself to do so. It was my doctor who mentioned to me the benefits of doing yoga and of practicing meditation in order to significantly diminish the psychological causes of erectile dysfunction.

I regularly do yoga and various exercises in the outdoors since they are supposed to help reduce stress and anxiety which cause the panic attacks that I have suffered from for such a long time now. I did not just come up with the idea that such activities help reduce stress, it was my psychologist who told me so by saying that they release endorphins in my brain, which the chemical substances which cause a person to feel motivated and happy. The advice of my doctor has been of help, since I do yoga and the other exercises that he recommended I have seen a significant reduction in the number of panic attacks that occur to me in a week and I suffer from a lot less anxiety.

If you have offer suffered a panic attack caused by anxiety you know just how awful it feels, if you haven’t they the best way that I can explain one to you is by telling you that you feel as if you are drowning, you lack air, you cannot breathe.

When I am finished with my yoga practice I feel relaxed, peaceful and I have a harmonious breathing which gives me peace and security. My top priority to fight anxiety is to control my breathing, to maintain it at a stable rhythm. The people that I have met at yoga class are nice and easy going which helps to make me feel even more relaxed and comfortable while practicing the exercises. As a compliment to yoga and exercise I also take medication to reduce anxiety, such medication is very powerful and should only be prescribed by a doctor or psychologist.
